Thallus rimose to rimose-areolate, yellowish white to pale yellow, epruinose. Soredia absent. Prothallus black. Apothecia sessile to constricted at the base, 0.8–1.6 mm diam.; disc blackish brown, slightly grey-pruinose; margin blackish brown, thin, entire, distinct at first, later becoming excluded. Cortex and algal cells absent. Excipulum 70–150 µm thick basally, 30–80 µm thick laterally, lacking crystals; inner part hyaline; outer part grey-green. Epihymenium dark green to olivaceous, K–, without crystals, c. 8–12 µm thick. Hymenium, subhymenium and hypothecium hyaline. Paraphyses sparingly branched and thickened apically. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 8.0–12.0 × 4.5–6.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow, C–, Pd+ yellow; medulla: K–, C–, Pd+ yellow; containing atranorin (major), usnic acid (major) and chloroatranorin (minor). | ||
In Australia this bipolar species occurs on exposed, siliceous rocks in the alpine zone in N.S.W. and Vic. | ||
